OUR PASTOR -JOHN SOMMERS
My wife (Dot) and I moved to Morgantown from Dallas-Ft. Worth and have been blessed to serve as the pastor of Cheat Lake Community Church since 2004. I was raised in a Christian home and at the age of fifteen, I had an encounter with the creator of heaven and earth that changed my life and that led me to call Christ my Savior and Lord. I no longer knew just about Him, I knew Him. Not long after becoming one of Christ’s followers, I heard the Lord’s request for me to care for His people. Since then, life has been discovering what it means to shepherd God’s dearly loved ones.
In addition to pastoring at Cheat Lake Community Church I served as the Senior Pastor at Grace Covenant Church, pastored with Metroplex Covenant Church (Colleyville, TX), and was the Youth pastor at First Baptist Church of Natchez. I am committed to growing and strengthening family, walking in and promoting community, and finding and teaching truth. Cheat Lake Community Church is a body of believers with diverse variety of Church traditions. What we have discovered is that our fellowship of believers has been birthed out of our individual relationships with the Father and because we know Him, it unites us as a spiritual family.

We believe that God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God alone is worthy of our praise, adoration, devotion, and worship. Man was created in God’s image and walked in perfect union with God. However, as a result of rebellion mankind became separated from God. We believe that the Bible is God’s word to all men. Human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit wrote it. Man was created to exist forever and will exist either eternally separated from God by sin or in union with God through forgiveness and salvation.
Our forgiveness and salvation are possible only through Jesus Christ, the Son of God! Jesus, the Son, is co-equal with God the Father. Jesus was born of a virgin. He lived a sinless life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all men by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days thereby conquering the power of sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will return again to earth to reign as King of Kings, and Lord
of Lords. The salvation Christ gave is a free gift from God to man. Man can never make up for his sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offering of forgiveness and accepting Him as Lord and Savior can man be saved from sin’s penalty. Eternal life with God begins the moment one repents and receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith. The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son of God. He also lives in
every Christian from the moment of salvation and comes in power when the believer is baptized in the Holy Spirit. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to the Christian for the purpose of witnessing, building up the body of Christ and for personal edification.
